Bonsai offers four tiers, all priced per user. There’s no free plan, just a 7-day trial. Prices run from $9 to $49 per user/month on annual billing, or $15 to $59 billed monthly. Here’s what each tier costs and whether it’s worth it.

Basic Plan: $9/Month Annual, $15 Monthly
Basic is not the freelancer entry point it sounds like. You get time tracking, task management, unlimited projects and clients, a CRM, a service library and the mobile app.
What’s missing is the money. No invoices, no payments, no proposals, no contracts. Basic is for someone who already bills elsewhere and only wants Bonsai to track hours and tasks.
If you came to Bonsai for proposals and invoicing, skip this tier.
Essentials Plan: $19/Month Annual, $25 Monthly
Essentials is where Bonsai becomes the all-in-one it’s known for. Invoices and payments via Stripe, proposals and contracts with e-signature, all templates, forms and questionnaires, scheduling, a client portal, plus expense and income tracking.
Unlimited proposals and invoices. Clients sign and pay from one link without creating an account.
The catch is branding. Essentials still shows Bonsai branding on client-facing documents. Removing it requires Premium.
Most solo freelancers land on Essentials. $19/month is small compared to a single project you win, and the contract templates alone justify it for anyone currently working without formal agreements.
Premium Plan: $29/Month Annual, $39 Monthly
Premium adds the business layer. Project insights, workload management, a Gantt view, a deals pipeline, custom fields, client tasks and messaging, and profit and productivity reports.
Branding comes off here. Proposals and invoices show your name, not Bonsai’s. For anyone pitching clients who notice these things, that alone is the upgrade reason.
Integrations unlock too: QuickBooks, Xero, Zapier, Calendly and Google. If Bonsai needs to talk to your accounting tool, Premium is the minimum.
Many freelancers never need Premium. Essentials covers the document and payment workflow. Move here when branding, reporting or an accounting sync starts costing you time.
Elite Plan: $49/Month Annual, $59 Monthly
Elite is for agencies and small teams, with a 3-user minimum, so the real floor is $147/month on annual billing. It adds custom permissions, timesheet locking, markup on expenses and custom data import, plus onboarding help.
Those are team controls, not freelancer features. A solo operator has no reason to be here.
Transaction and Hidden Costs
Stripe fees are the hidden cost. US card transactions typically cost 2.9% + $0.30. A $1,000 card payment costs you $29.30 in fees. Over a year of regular card payments, you could pay Stripe $500 or more.
ACH transfers are cheaper but slower. Some clients only pay by card. You absorb the fee or ask them to transfer manually.
Per-user pricing is the other thing to watch. Every seat multiplies the plan price, so a two-person studio on Premium is $58/month on annual billing, not $29.
No overage charges or surprise fees in the plan itself. What you see is what you pay.
Annual Billing Discount
Bonsai markets yearly billing as up to 4 months free. Basic drops from $15 to $9, Essentials from $25 to $19, Premium from $39 to $29, and Elite from $59 to $49, all per user per month.
On Essentials that’s $72 a year saved. Jump to annual if you’re staying past three months. The discount is real.
Bonsai vs. Alternatives at Each Price Point
At $9, Basic competes with free time trackers and Trello. Pay for it only if you want hours and tasks next to your CRM.
At $19, Essentials competes with Wave (free invoicing), Google Docs (proposals) and a standalone e-signature tool. The question is consolidation versus specialists. ZipBooks Smarter is $15/month for stronger accounting with no proposals.
At $29+, Premium faces FreshBooks, Zoho Books, HoneyBook Starter ($29/month yearly) and Dubsado Starter ($35/month). Bonsai’s edge shrinks because alternatives do more. You pay for simplicity, not depth.
Bonsai pricing makes sense at Essentials, and at Premium if branding removal or an accounting sync matters. Beyond that, you’re often better served by specialized tools or all-in-one platforms with deeper feature sets.
Final Pricing Take
Essentials at $19/month (annual) is where value starts for freelancers. Basic is a time tracker. Premium and Elite serve agencies more than solo operators.
Invoicing fewer than 20 clients monthly and sending fewer than 5 proposals weekly? Essentials pays for itself after one won project. Payment processing alone saves time and confusion.
Include Stripe fees in your ROI calculation. A $25/month Bonsai subscription becomes $50+ with transaction fees. Still cheap next to your hourly rate, but know the real cost.
